About Posey County

The City of Mt. Vernon, about 18 miles from Evansville, is the county seat and has an active business climate. Mt. Vernon is home to the Southwest Indiana Chamber Posey County office and the Posey County Economic Development Partnership.

The Town of New Harmony, a historic town in western Posey County along the Wabash River, was first a spiritual sanctuary and later a haven for international scientists, scholars, and educators who sought equity in communal living. The small town is home to Indiana’s oldest continuously operating public library, the Working Men’s Institute, Harmonie State Park, many historic structures, and charming shops, boutiques, and restaurants.

Other communities in Posey County include the Towns of Poseyville (about 21 miles from Evansville), Griffin (about 29 miles from Evansville), and Cynthiana (about 19 miles from Evansville).

Residents of Posey County are served by two public school districts: the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon and the Metropolitan School District of North Posey County.
